Core GMS Package for Huawei Android Phones & Google Play Services APK Download

Living in China means you’d need to keep your eyes and ears open all the time to learn new upcoming adventures knocking your doors every now and then. Although there could be so many language related problems, the technical issues due to internet censorship are also often not less challenging. And of course, we’d need to deal with the internet and VPN related problems (Download ExpressVPN, the best VPN). I live in Suzhou (Jiangsu, China) and I’ve been trying my best to adapt to the local living situations. But still there is simply too much to learn.

For example, yet another complex situation appeared when I bought my new Huawei Honor mobile phone in February, 2018 (online shopping on JingDong).

Initially, everything looked ok with the new gadget. However, the problems suddenly emerged out of nowhere when I tried to download and use Google Apps on my Huawei phone. Soon I realized that in order to use Google Apps, Huawei Android phones require us to install a Core GMS Package. Moreover, since Google services are heavily blocked in China, I had a tough time to find Google Play services APK download file in the mainland China. This post is aimed at solving the same problem, especially for Google savvy expats living in China. I’ll directly provide you a free download link to the “gmsinstaller.apk” file.

Btw, during the Core GMS Package installation process, the package would need to communicate with the Google Servers. That means, if you are installing the package in China (where Google services are generally blocked), you’ll first need to have a VPN connection (Download ExpressVPN). Huawei Android phones need Core GMS Package

Well, overall Huawei phones seem to be quite nice so far, and I’m glad about my decision to buy a Huawei phone for the first time. However, mobile phones in China don’t have preinstalled Google Apps.

So, I tried to find Google Apps in Huawei App store, and installed quite a few Apps, such as Google Chrome, Google Translate, etc. However, there was always some weird problem cropping up. For example, I installed Google Play store, but the App would never open. I got the error message: “Core GMS packages – install core GMS packages to use Google Play Store”. Let me show you the screenshot from my phone for a better clarity-

Although the Google Translate App did work on my Huawei Phone, there was consistently a warning message being thrown by the device. Here is the screenshot of another message-

Problems with Core GMS Package download links

After doing some research on the internet, I figured out that we need to install a file named “gmsinstaller.apk” on Huawei Android phones in order to run Google Apps.

But I struggled to download this file.

The issue was – I couldn’t download the file as most of the links were directed/redirected to Google servers. I live in China, and Google doesn’t work here – so the Google links were not helpful to me.

Although I had access to Google (I have a Singapore SIM card with international roaming internet data), the “gmsinstaller.apk” file somehow wouldn’t get downloaded on my Huawei phone.

Finally, I asked one of my friends in Singapore to download the file, upload to an online disc drive easily accessible in China and share download link with me. However, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc. count help due to access restrictions in the mainland China.

My friend later kindly shared the file using Microsoft SharePoint. Subsequently, I was able to download the Core GMS Package file in the mainland China.

You can simply click on it, save, unzip, and install the APK file in Huawei Android phones.

Subsequently, all the so far installed Google Apps would need to be reinstalled on your phone. The package would automatically trigger re-installations, and you may simply follow the instructions.

Will gmsinstaller.apk solve all your Google problems?

Well, the gmsinstaller.apk will help you a lot to run Google Apps (including Google Play Store) on your phone. However, you may still see some warnings on your phone when you run Google Apps (e.g. YouTube). Here are some of the issues (with screenshot for your reference) that I have observed on my Huwai Honor mobile phone despite installing the aforementioned Core GMS Package.

• Warning message while installing YouTube-

• Google Translate App sometime looks offline with the internet data (online with Wi-Fi)-

• You may need to update Google Play regularly, and that may require a VPN connection if you are living in the mainland China.

I was trying to use Google Maps in China, and I got the following notification-

These warnings aside, I have been able to use Google Apps comfortably in China with the help of this Apk file.
