I was travelling to China’s Zhenjiang city in November, 2018. It was a weekend trip from Suzhou to the neighboring city. Well, Zhenjiang indeed offers quite a few travel attractions worth exploring! I’ve already written a detailed post about some of the general observations and the top things to do in Zhenjiang city.
In fact, one of the most famous travel attractions, in Zhenjiang city, is the Former Residence of Pearl Sydenstricker Buck.
Pearl, also known by her Chinese name, Sai Zhenzhu (赛珍珠, Sài zhēnzhū), was an American writer who went on to win the Nobel Prize in literature.
I’m dedicating this blog-post as a mark of my tribute to the celebrated author. Basically, in this post, I’d share some of the photos that I clicked in and around her house.
Former residences in Zhenjiang city
As such, there are at least three famous former residences in Zhenjiang city-
- Former Residence of Lu Xiaobo,
- Former Residence of Pearl Sydenstricker Buck, and
- Former Residence of Shen Kuo.
In this article, I’d take you through the house of Pearl Sydenstricker Buck. Initially, I’d share photos from the Pearl Sydenstricker Buck Park (outside the house of Pearl), then photos from the inside of her house.
Pearl Sydenstricker Buck cultural park
The two-floor residence is located in Zhenjiang city’s Pearl Sydenstricker Buck Cultural Park (near Dengyun Hill).
As you enter the park from the roadside, you’ll see the welcome pillar-
Right behind the pillar, there is a statue of Pearl Sydenstricker Buck-
Just beside the statue, you’ll see a display of her widely acclaimed book – The Good Earth.
Well, the whole park portrays literary achievements of Pearl S. Buck.
All the important points of interest in the cultural park are displayed using the signboards. Here is a photo for your reference-
Pearl received the Nobel Prize in literature in 1938. The park has put up photos celebrating the same Nobel Prize awarding ceremony-

Now, let me show you some of the photos near Pearl’s residential apartment-
In front of the gate, you’ll see the descriptions, in both English and Chinese, celebrating the cherished author-
Here are the opening hours of the Former Residence of Pearl S. Buck: 9:00-17:00 from Tuesday to Sunday, closed on Monday (except for national holidays).
During the lunch hours, the visitors are not allowed to go inside the house. However, you can wander in the Park virtually any time, the park doesn’t have a well-designated entry gate. 🙂
Photos inside the house of Pearl S. Buck
Now, let’s get inside the Pearl’s house.
Inside the rooms, you’ll see the official descriptions of the furniture and artifacts describing their characteristics with sufficient details.
You can also see the furniture used by Pearl in original shape as they have been well preserved.
There is a symbolic display of the Chinese dishes that Pearl used to like-
Here are the photos from her father’s bedroom-
The activity room-
The dining hall-
A childhood photo-
The sitting room-
Bedroom of Pearl’s wet nurse-
Pearl’s study-

Alright, I believe that’s too much of the photos for one blog-post, so I’d humbly stop here!
In summary, so far, I’ve travelled to 26 Chinese cities, and I feel great about feeling the real soul of China. As such, if you are travelling to Zhenjiang city, a trip to the Former Residence of Pearl Sydenstricker Buck is definitely recommended. An hour or so would be a good enough time to learn about the charismatic American author.
That’s all in this blog-post about the Former Residence of Pearl Sydenstricker Buck, Zhenjiang city.
